An Important Message – Please Take Action!

Dear Neighbor:

We need you to act now!  Minneapolis Public Schools is seriously considering moving its headquarters from 807 NE Broadway to 1250 West Broadway….completely out of our neighborhood…taking with them the people who work in our neighborhood and support our local businesses.   They will leave behind a shuttered building at 807 in favor of constructing a new, multi-million dollar headquarters on the other side of town.  That’s right!  They aren’t even re-using any of the  existing school buildings that they have shuttered, but propose a completely new one.

Tomorrow evening is an “informational  meeting” at St. Maron at 6:30 p.m.  This is an opportunity to let the Board know that we want them to remain in our neighborhood, refurbish their building and abandon their plan to abandon our neighborhood!  The NE Area Chamber of Commerce has taken a position in favor of retaining the CURRENT location, which supports the “Ryan Companies proposal” to rehab the current building.

Please, please show up to and let the Board know that  all the Northeast neighborhood residents and businesses want the current headquarters to stay in its present location.   This is important!   So, please be there. And if you would like to contact school board members to let them know your position, please do so;  the meeting and School Board contact information is below.

Minneapolis Public Schools discusses recommendation for a ‘right-sized’ district headquarters with the Board of Education and public this week.

The Minneapolis Public Schools on April 8 will host an informational meeting to provide community members with the opportunity to learn more about the three proposals for right-sizing district headquarters that were presented to the Board of Education on March 23. At the meeting, representatives from each of the three firms under consideration will detail their proposals and provide the community with an opportunity to ask questions.

Currently, MPS operates administrative offices in four buildings: 807 NE Broadway, Webster, 1250 W Broadway and the Lehmann Center. The new headquarters proposals right-size the amount of administrative space to the number of employees, reducing administrative office space from 633,000 square feet to 275,000. Consolidating space into one facility will save approximately $10 million over the next three decades and provide administrative staff with an appropriate place to work.

The three proposals for review include:

  • 1250 West Broadway:  New build-to-suit structure for District Headquarters/Welcome Center.  The proposal includes a partial renovation of the former Anishinabe building at 2225 East Lake St. for Welcome Center/Community Ed/Adult Basic Education. (This satellite option could be part of the 807 renovation as well.)
  • 807 NE Broadway (current headquarters): Full renovation of existing district administration building
  • 11th Avenue & 3rd Street South (Valspar Building): Lease of an existing single tenant office building with parking ramp
